Birdy's creators, Heiko Muller and Marcus Ries, met at Germany's prestigious Darmstadt University of Technology. One day in 1992, while they were both enjoying cycling, Marcus showed Heiko a cardboard model of an unusual bicycle. The two built a prototype based on this model, which became the "world's first Birdy."

Before Birdy was born, there were many folding bicycles , but Marcus says, "There was no bicycle that was 'really fun to ride.'" The two men aimed to create a bike that could be folded up small and still be ridden in a sporty way.

Birdy's innovative folding mechanism is the most distinctive feature of this concept. By not folding the main frame, high rigidity is ensured to withstand pedaling power as is. And by adjusting the angles of the top tube, handlebar post, and seat post, you can easily adopt the ideal forward-leaning posture for sporty riding.
